  • [10/31/07] Physics is Phun show: "It's Physics".

    The UMD-MRSEC is pleased work with the University of Maryland Physics Department's "Physics is Phun" Public Lecture-Demonstration Program Series. The next show in the 2007-2008 Series is entitled "It's Physics" and will be held Thursday 1 November 2007, Friday 2 November 2007, and Saturday 3 November 2007.   • [10/19/07] UMD-MRSEC Workshop on Multiferroics III: Thin films, devices, and novel probe approaches to multiferroic materials..

    This workshop will take place Friday, October 19, 2007 at the University of Maryland MRSEC. The workshop will feature talks and discussion of current important research issues in multiferroic materials by members of the oxides team of the NSF supported UMD-MRSEC and several outside speakers.

  • [07/10/07] UMD-MRSEC Workshop on Multiferroics II.

    This workshop will take place Thursday, July 19, 2007 at the University of Maryland MRSEC. The workshop will feature talks and discussion of current important research issues in multiferroic materials by members of the oxides team of the NSF supported UMD-MRSEC and several outside speakers. The main theme will be the physics of the spin and lattice coupling in multiferroics including toroidicity. Speakers will include Sang-Wook Cheong (Rutgers), Dennis Drew (UMD), Jeff Lynn (NIST), Thomas Kaplan (MSU), Michel Kenzelmann, (Zurich), Daniel Khomskii (Köln), Maxim Mostovoy (Groningen), and Seunghun Lee (University of Virginia). In addition there will be poster sessions featuring current research activities. See the Workshop Flyer.

  • [02/15/07] National Academy of Sciences Arthur M. Sackler Colloquium

    The National Academy of Sciences Arthur M. Sackler Colloquium will host Nanomaterials in Biology and Medicine: Promises and Perils April 10-11, 2007 in Washington, D.C. The colloquium will be structured to include researchers, postdoctoral fellows, directors of public granting agencies, and policy makers considering the societal and ethical outcomes of recent nanomaterials development. Organized by Robert Austin, this colloquium offers a discounted registration fee of $100 for graduate and postdoctoral students and features the 7th Annual Sackler Lecture (free and open to the public) by George Whitesides (Harvard University).

    Co-Sponsored by MRSEC & the International Spy Museum

    MRSEC is co-sponsoring a KidSpyTM Workshop for ages 10-13 at the International Spy Museum on Thursday, February 22 from 7PM to 9PM. Registration and details can be found at the Spy Museum website. Or print a flyer and invite a friend!

    Operation Night Spy: The cloak of darkness is a spy’s best friend! By the light of day, spies are exposed and missions can go awry. When the sun sets and shadows emerge, espionage is the name of the game. Explore the tricks of the trade that enable spies to operate under the cover of darkness. From infrared night goggles to ultraviolet-light secret messages, young recruits will try their hand at creating and using tools that will help them spy in the shadows. With scientists from the University of Maryland by their side demonstrating cool technology and materials, mission failure will not be an option. Will KidSpy recruits see their way through? Will darkness help or hurt them? Only those with top secret access to Operation Night Spy will discover the answers to these questions.

  • [03/30/06] 9th Annual University of Maryland Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) and the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Middle School Student Science Conference
    This is the 9th conference in which selected students from MRSEC partner schools have worked with University of Maryland MRSEC researchers to develop and practice professional scientific presentations. The success of this program can be seen in the number of students who have gone on to study science and engineering in high school and college.
    This year’s students have worked extraordinarily hard on their projects. At the conference on May 2, 2006, they will be judged on the basis of content and presentation. Awards will be given to the most outstanding student/mentor partnership.

This workshop will feature talks and discussion on the current research being conducted on multiferroic materials by the oxides team of the NSF-supported UMD-MRSEC. Speakers will include Sang-Wook Cheong (Rutgers), Jeff Lynn (NIST), Daniel Khomskii (Köln), Ichiro Takeuchi (Materials), S.   • [10/31/05] Professor Takeuchi’s review article on combinatorial materials science has appeared as a cover article in Materials Today. In the article, Takeuchi, Jochen Lauterbach of Univ. of Delaware and Michael Fasolka of NIST discuss how combinatorial and high-throughput approaches are changing the way researchers perform experiments in materials science.
    Combinatorial experimentation allows simultaneous synthesis and screening of large arrays of different materials. It dramatically accelerates the speed at which new compounds with enhanced physical properties can be identified.

  • [10/01/05] The UMD-MRSEC Receives Third Consecutive Award from the National Science Foundation

    The Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at the University of Maryland, under the directorship of Professor Ellen Williams, has been selected for continued support through the National Science Foundation.

    Materials Research Science and Engineering Centers are supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to undertake materials research of scope and complexity that would not be feasible under traditional funding of individual research projects.
