2005 Summer Program Staff
Instructors
Donna Hammer
I am the 2005 Summer Program Director and the Assistant Director of the MRSEC. In addition to overseeing all of our summer camps, this summer I look forward to being one of the camp leaders for the Science, Engineering, and You camp.
Carolyn Garvey
I am the Coordinator for MRSEC Education Outreach Programs and will also be one of the camp leaders for the Science, Engineering, and You elementary camp. When I am not instructing the summer camp I am working with MRSEC members and our partners to develop and carry out our education outreach programs. My most recent successes include writing and presenting lessons on making science fair projects for our partner schools and coordinating a Kid Spy workshop at the International Spy Museum. Outside of work I spend most of my time playing the competitive sport of Ultimate Frisbee, seeing movies with friends, and eating at ethnic restaurants.
Julie Callis
I work for MRSEC as a program management specialist and webmaster, and will be teaching the Web Development & Design camp this summer. In addition to designing and maintaining the MRSEC website, I also designed and maintain websites for other organizations, including a computer consultant group, a dental practice, and a church. My teaching experience most recently includes teaching Honors 100 at the University of Maryland, a semester-long colloquium for freshman entering the Honors Program. I look forward to working with campers and sharing my interest in web design.
Daniel Steinfeldt
Hey! My name is Daniel Steinfeldt. I’m a rising junior at the University of Maryland at College Park, and I’m doing a double-degree in mechanical engineering and studio art. I’m not graduating anytime soon, so in the mean time, I’ll be teaching the “Engineering Challenge: Maker/Breaker Inc.” summer camp here at MRSEC. I’m obsessed with music and art, but I also find engineering to be fun and rewarding. Some favorite things of mine are my laptop, my car, my enormous music collection, my guitars, squirrels, Asian foods, anime, friends, church and spending time with the love of my life, Mei-Ye.
Mary Smith
I have been working with the MRSEC homeschool outreach program for four years. Last year that included teaching microscopy classes. This will be my first time teaching a MRSEC camp, although I have previously taught science camps at the Capital Children’s Museum. Other experience in education has included working as a science educator at the Capital Children’s Museum, teaching classes for homeschoolers, being a Girl Scout leader, and teaching high school science and math as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
Sogee Spinner
My name is Sogee Spinner. I am currently a physics Ph.D. student at the University of Maryland and this summer I will be instructing the circuit camps. My physics interest is in particle physics, but I have had many encounters with electronics and I am looking forward to combining the knowledge I’ve gained with previous teaching experiences this summer at camp. Some of these experiences include: teaching and coaching swimming to middle school/high school students and instructing introductory electronics lab to college students.
Assistants:
Shuk-kuen Chiu
Ni Hao (Hello in Chinese). My name is Shuk-Kuen Chiu, Junior. I am majoring in Elementary Education and Chinese. For the past four summers, I worked as a tutor at the Chinese Community Church. For this summer, I will be working as a summer camp assistant for Science, Engineering, and You camp and Engineering Challenge camp. I am looking forward to meeting all the students and their parents.
Brad Hall
I am currently enrolled at the University of Maryland as a senior in Electrical Engineering. My interests within my field include electro-physics as well as microelectronics. In the past, I have worked with middle and high-schoolers at a ski club located in Rockville in which we would take a group up to ski liberty each week for a night of skiing. For the summer, I will be an assistant instructor working in the circuit camp as well as the web development camp and the Science, Engineering & You camp. My future plans include graduate school here at UMD and possibly a career in education.
Katrina Hsen
My name is Katrina Hsen. This is my fist time working as an assistant counselor with the MRSEC summer camps. I recently graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. As an assistant teacher in 2 classes at my high school, I gained teaching experience in addition to other classroom strategies when working closely with students. I also have a lot of experience working closely with science through labs and lectures in my physics, chemistry, and biology classes. This fall, I will be attending the University of Maryland and am planning to study Psychology and Criminal Justice.
Erin Lukomska-Schlauch
I am Erin Schlauch and this is my first year as a camp counselor with MRSEC. I will be entering the university in the fall, with plans to pursue a career in Secondary Education and a focus in Biology. I graduated from Parkdale High School with a University High School Natural Science Diploma. At Parkdale my schedule was filled with such Advance Placement courses as AP Biology, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry, where I have studied everything from the cell to the atom and gained extensive lab experience. I plan to take this opportunity as a MRSEC counselor to expand my horizons and get my teaching career underway.
