The University of Maryland MRSEC grants ended in September 2013 after 17 years of successful operation. This site remains as a history of the center, but will not be actively maintained.

What is our logo?
Our MRSEC logo shows the arrangement of atoms at the surface of a crystal. Crystals are made up of layers, or "planes" of atoms, perfectly stacked in an ordered pattern. Because this surface has been cut at a slight angle to the crystal planes, it appears "stepped" (we call this type of surface a vicinal surface). Modern scanned-probe microscopes, such as the STM, allow us to see the atoms at the surface of a crystal, producing images very similar to this one.

Science, Engineering, and You Camp

Dates: August 17 - August 21, 2009

Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: University of Maryland, College Park

Science, Engineering, and You is a one week summer camp for students entering grades 4-6 with an interest in the fascinating worlds of science and engineering. Each day of the camp is filled with exciting experiments, educational demonstrations, interesting lessons, and a fun-filled field trip. All activities are designed to help students build interest, appreciation, and knowledge in science and engineering.
