The University of Maryland MRSEC grants ended in September 2013 after 17 years of successful operation. This site remains as a history of the center, but will not be actively maintained.

What is our logo?
Our MRSEC logo shows the arrangement of atoms at the surface of a crystal. Crystals are made up of layers, or "planes" of atoms, perfectly stacked in an ordered pattern. Because this surface has been cut at a slight angle to the crystal planes, it appears "stepped" (we call this type of surface a vicinal surface). Modern scanned-probe microscopes, such as the STM, allow us to see the atoms at the surface of a crystal, producing images very similar to this one.

Science, Engineering, and YOU! Camp

Dates: July 22 - 26, 2013

Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Location: University of Maryland, College Park

Science, Engineering, and You is a one week summer camp for students entering grades 4-5 with an interest in the fascinating worlds of science and engineering. Each day of the camp is filled with exciting experiments, educational demonstrations, interesting lessons, and a fun-filled field trip. All activities are designed to help students build interest, appreciation, and knowledge in science and engineering.

Berwyn Heights Elementary students participating in MRSEC programs should contact Mrs. Bastio for information about the camp.
